Become an EAC Volunteer Mediator
The
EAC Mediation Centers (located in both Nassau and Suffolk Counties)
are conflict resolution programs which help youth, families, schools,
and the community at large resolve disputes. They handle a variety
of disputes such as small claims mediation, special education
mediation, community residence/supportive housing mediation, as
well as Lemon Law Arbitration for consumers throughout Long Island.
Mediation
is a voluntary process in which the parties sit down with a team
of two professional, impartial mediators to discuss their concerns.
When the parties agree to a solution, the mediators put the agreement
into written form, which is final and binding.
Trained,
professional mediators enable parties to reach a legally binding
written agreement allowing such cases to stay out of the courtroom
and save taxpayer's dollars. Research has shown mediation to be
a more effective and long-lasting mechanism for resolving disputes
than court cases outside of the system. EAC volunteer mediators
handle over 5,200 disputes a year.
The
dedicated and reliable mediators and arbitrators are volunteers
within the community they serve. The mediators complete a 25-hour
basic mediation training that provides them with the skills required
to mediate effectively. In addition, volunteer mediators will
learn techniques in agreement writing, as well as enhancing their
mediation methods. Arbitrators for the NYS Lemon Law Program are
volunteers as well, and they receive additional, specialized training
which includes an overview of the laws and guidelines of the NYS
Lemon Law Program.
Our
volunteer mediators and arbitrators find a wonderful sense of
fulfillment by assisting people with their disputes. When asked
why they choose volunteer mediation the most common response was,
"I want to give back to the community and this is the perfect
way to do it".
