Internship
Opportunities
At
EAC, we offer a wide range of opportunities to graduate and undergraduate
students from local colleges and universities who have field work
requirements as part of their course of study. Individuals pursuing
degrees in social work, criminal justice, vocational rehabilitation,
education and special education, psychology and related social
sciences are welcome to apply.
We
offer on-site, professional supervision, hands-on work experience,
flexible scheduling and the opportunity for students to connect
theory and practice. Basic skills like record-keeping, case management,
identifying and referring for services and monitoring client progress
are all part of the learning process. Below are just a few of
the internships available. We encourage any interested students
to contact us directly to discuss their needs and work out an
individualized program to meet their particular needs.
Social
Work/Criminal Justice Internships:
Throughout New York City and Long Island, EAC offers criminal
justice majors the chance to work with offenders who are in court
because of a substance abuse-related offense. Opportunities are
available in both Criminal and Family Courts, and involve working
with treatment agencies, judges and offenders in case management
activities: assessing addictions, referrals to treatment and monitoring
treatment progress.
Social
Work/Child Welfare Internships:
Internships are available for students seeking careers working
with kids, particularly kids who are in the child welfare system
(abused and neglected children). Responsibilities include making
home visits, writing assessments, appearing in court as well as
conducting some of the daily administrative tasks that every social
worker ultimately has to do. Our interns are given their own caseload
so that they may become familiar with the children's ongoing needs.
Interns receive exposure to Family Court and the social service
agencies that drive many of the life decisions for children in
foster care, or children who are being neglected or abused by
their parents. Opportunities are also available for evening and
weekend internships in our Supervised Visitation Programs.
Special
Education Internships:
In Nassau and Suffolk (Long Island) Counties, opportunities are
available for college students majoring in special education to
provide one-on-one instruction to students with learning disabilities.
Subject areas covered include grades 7-12, for students with all
levels of functioning. On-site supervision by certified special
education teachers is coordinated with the student's academic
program.
Social
Work/Gerontology Internships:
EAC's Senior Programs, based in Nassau County, provide assistance
to home-bound seniors and their families. Our Senior Respite Program
gives family caregivers a break by matching them up with a trained
volunteer. Interns will go into the home to spend time with the
older person during the time the caregiver is out of the house.
The Meals on Wheels Program provides homebound senior citizens
with nutritious food. Interns will make home visits to interview
current clients to assess clients status, handle intakes, and
work with menu planning and catering to ensure proper dietary
planning to meet special needs.
Social
Work/Vocational Internships:
EAC offers internship in our programs working with parents who
are in violation of court-ordered child support payments. Interns
meet with clients, assist in job development and placement, identify
and address barriers to employment such as drug or alcohol abuse,
and encourage a renewed commitment to a positive parent-child
relationship. Evening hours are available.
