and to promote safer driving practices through education
on topics such as aggressive driving, driving distractions,
improper or non-use of seat belts, child safety seats,
booster seats or other child passenger restraints
and leaving children unattended in motor vehicles.
The program is family-centered and targets the non-English
and low income populations in Queens, Nassau & Suffolk Counties.
Description:
SAFE START staff are certified child passenger safety
seat technicians. Outreach is conducted to day care
centers, car dealers, churches and other places where
non-English speaking parents may reside or work. The
project aims to improve child safety and reduce risk
to children through parent education and education
of day care center staff.
Project
staff also participate in child passenger safety events,
at which car seat installations are checked and information
is distributed. The purpose of these events in to
increase public awareness and provide parents with
the opportunity to have their current child safety
seat checked for proper fitting.
Funding:
Program funding is provided by the Governor's Traffic
Safety Committee through the Nassau County Traffic
Safety Board.
