Description/Purpose:
EAC’s Port Washington Senior Center is a lively gathering place for frail and low income senior citizens. Rather than face the prospect of lonely weekdays, seniors flock to the center to enjoy a nutritious lunch, and musical and cultural performances. Exercise, Tai Chi and Yoga classes help seniors remain fit and healthy. Monthly birthday parties and holiday celebrations feature local musicians and performances by children from area schools. Door to door transportation and trips to shopping centers and banks are offered daily. Professional staff offer assistance with completing medical forms and make referrals for services such food stamps and financial counseling.
Program Impact:
The population of Nassau County is growing older and more diverse. Over 78% of the seniors are 75 years of age or older with the average age being 80. The majority are women who live alone and need assistance with boarding the bus and participating in activities.
Program Outcomes: The Port Washington Senior Center helps older residents of Port Washington “age gracefully”. For over 35 years, our innovative classes and stimulating activities have helped senior citizens improve or maintain their health. Last year, we provided 279 senior citizens with the opportunity to enjoy lunch with friends, and keep mentally and physically fit through exercise and health screenings.
Funding:
Funding is provided by the Nassau County Department of Senior Citizen Affairs, the NYS Office for the Aging and the US Department of Health. The Center is supported by the Town of North Hempstead and the Community Chest of Port Washington.
$2,500 is needed for expenses for a yoga teacher and bus rental for trips to local attractions. A donation of $250.00 covers the cost of an exercise class for one month or the cost of a bus rental for a trip.
