A MODEL PROGRAM DESIGNATED BY THE UNITED STATES DEPARTMENT OF JUSTICE AS ONE OF FIVE NATIONAL LEARNING SITES.

Purpose:
The purpose of the Bronx TASC Mental Health Court Program is to improve the lives of people with mental illness, assist judicial decision-making, and identify and safely divert individuals with serious mental illness from current or potential incarceration. We enhance public safety by placing these individuals in appropriate community-based integrated mental health and substance abuse services, monitor their care and form cooperative community partnerships within diverse clinical settings.

Description: The Bronx TASC Mental Health Court Program is a unit of EAC's Bronx TASC that was conceived and created by members of the Bronx provider, consumer, family, police and criminal justice communities. We provide assessment, placement and clinically-informed case management for defendants facing criminal charges in Bronx Supreme and Bronx Criminal Courts. Ongoing training and planning for the service with community stakeholders is supported by federal funding.

Funding: The program receives funding from United States Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (Co-Occurring Disorders); United States Department of Health and Human Services, SAMHSA Center for Substance Abuse Prevention (HIV Prevention); United States Department of Health and Human Services Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (Homelessness); United States Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance (BJA) grant program for the development of mental health courts; New York State Department of Probation and Correctional Alternatives (DPCA); New York City Office of the Criminal Justice Coordinator.
