Purpose: The Mediation Alternative Project (MAP) provides alternative dispute resolution services in the form of mediation and arbitration to residents of Nassau County. Opened in 1981, MAP serves over 6,000 clients annually.

Description: MAP uses trained mediators and arbitrators to handle a wide range of disputes, with the goal of reaching legally-binding agreements. Disputes handled include parent/child conflicts, neighborhood disputes referred by the District Attorney's Office and Police, school related problems between youth, inter-racial conflicts, minor criminal offenses involving restitution and small claims cases in all District Courts with mediators on site. We also provide special education and early intervention mediation to resolve conflicts between school systems and parents of children with special needs. Lemon Law Arbitration is provided for new and used car owners as referred by the NYS Attorney General's Office.
In addition, the Mediation Alternative Project assists the Nassau County Department of Social Services with conciliation services to resolve disputes between public assistance recipients and the Department. The Mediation Alternative Project also provides conflict resolution skills training for students throughout Nassau County ranging from elementary to high school level.

Funding: The program receives funding from the NYS Unified Court System, NYS Department of Probation and Correctional Alternatives, Nassau County Youth Board, Nassau County Department of Social Services, IOLA Fund, NYS Education Department, NYS Department of Health, the NYS Attorney General's Office and the NYS Commission on Quality of Care.
