Purpose:
The purpose of EAC's Learning Centers it to help
junior and senior high schools students who cannot
function in a regular school environment obtain the
necessary education which will make it possible for
them to graduate from high school. EAC's first program,
the Long Island Learning Centers have been serving
learning disabled and emotionally disturbed students
since 1971.
Description:
The Long Island Learning Centers provide individualized
instruction for both in-school and after-school youth.
Students at LILCs generally fall into one or more
of the following categories: mildly to severely learning
disabled; emotionally handicapped; excessively truant;
difficult to teach; withdrawn, phobic, anxious or
depressed.
Students
are referred to EAC's Learning Centers from their
home school district. An individualized plan of instruction
is developed for each student based on the coursework
needed by that student to accumulate credits towards
graduation. Students receive instruction in small
groups or on a one-to-one basis, using regular, modified
or accelerated secondary school curricula, according
to each student's ability.
Instruction
includes preparation for Regents exams, Regents Competency
Tests, or GED preparation to meet New York graduation
requirements. Students also receive counseling with
a licensed NY State Certified psychologist or licensed
social worker, psychoeducational evaluations as needed,
and routine standardized pre and post testing.
Funding:
The programs operate as a fee for service with the
school districts paying for those students that they
refer. Additional funds are received from private
donations and the David Heyman Scholarship Fund.
