Purpose:
EAC’s Learning Centers are unique alternative high school programs that serve learning disabled, emotionally disabled and regular education students through individualized or small group instruction. The program has been in existence for more than 35 years. We offer a unique opportunity for students to experience academic success. Through our program, students gain improved self-esteem and social appropriateness. Students referred to the Learning Centers present a wide variety of school related issues and unique characteristics. The Learning Centers are designed for high school age students who have average to above average IQ levels. In addition to the emphasis on academics, counseling is an integral part of the program. Students generally fall into one or more of the following categories: Learning Disabled (LD); Emotionally Disturbed (ED); Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD); Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD); Other Health Impaired (OHI); excessively truant; school phobic and/or anxious; depressed and/or withdrawn; or peer relationship challenged.
Program Impact: Students are referred to the Learning Centers by school district CSE’s or by high school principals. The school district provides intake materials such as copies of the IEP, psychological reports and transcripts. Prospective students and parents/guardians are then invited to participate in an intake interview. Students that complete our program or return to their home high school are ready for success in college, vocational programs, the military, or the world of work. Additionally, these students are likely to be more employable, show a decrease in criminal activity, and less likely to received public assistance.
Program Outcomes: The Learning Centers are academic programs that are behaviorally based. We are guided by the philosophy that every individual has the potential to grow and develop uniquely. Our highly structured program provides students with a safe and secure environment so that they can reach their potential and be successful. Students are expected to be respectful and behave in a mature manner. The Learning Centers offer: instruction in accordance with New York State curriculum standards, preparation for Regents and/or RCT exams, a congenial and supportive learning environment, psychological/counseling support services, and close monitoring of attendance. Additionally, students leave our program with a high school diploma ready for success in college, vocational programs, the military or the world of work Credits toward graduation are awarded by the referring school district and students receive their high school diplomas from their home high school. Contributions to the Learning Centers by individuals and businesses are used to provide scholarships for additional education to students that complete our program.
Funding:
Transportation and tuition is provided by the referring district.
