Purpose: The Lemon Law Arbitration Program is designed to provide an independent, speedy, efficient and fair forum to settle disputes for consumers whose new or used vehicles turn out to be "lemons". Started by the Attorney General in 1987, EAC began to arbitrate these cases in 1996.

Description: Professionally trained arbitrators hear evidence presented by the consumer and the manufacturer or dealer. Eligibility for new vehicles include failure to resolve the repair after four or more attempts, or is out of service due to repair for at least 30 days with thin the first 18,0000 miles or two years, whichever comes first. Full refund or replacement vehicle are possible dispositions for the consumer. Used or leased vehicles are also eligible depending on the mileage at the time of purchase, warranty and time out of service. Motorized wheelchairs as well as Excess Wear and Tear for leased vehicles are also covered under the Lemon Law statute. If the arbitration is in favor of the consumer all associated fees are returned.

Funding: The program receives funding from the NYS Attorney General's Office.
