Hempstead, NY 11550
(516) 483-0230

Purpose: The goal of the JOBS Program is to help Nassau County public assistance recipients gain the skills necessary to become employed and self-sufficient. JOBS was developed in 1991 as part of a New York State Welfare-to-Work initiative. Over 7,000 individuals have been helped by JOBS since 1991.

Description: Individuals are referred to JOBS by the Nassau County Department of Social Services. The JOBS staff provide testing and an assessment based on skills, interests, aptitudes and needs. After the initial assessment, an employability plan is developed delineating the steps that are required to reach the ultimate goal of competitive employment. The plan may include the following educational activities such as literacy, ESL services or basic education, GED preparation or referrals to a Community College or to specialized educational programs. Vocational activities include job skills and job readiness training; job search and work experience activities; job development and placement. Attendance and progress are monitored throughout the program.

Supportive services on an as needed basis such as tuition, books, transportation, license fees, uniforms, tools and equipment, car insurance and lunch may be included. In addition to the services listed above, all participants are eligible to receive child care services either through an informal provider or through regulated child care.

Funding: JOBS is funded by the Nassau County Department of Social Services.
