Purpose:
The goal of the Family Treatment Court is to promote
the rehabilitation of neglectful substance-abusing
parents, the preservation or reunification of their
families and/or permanency for their children. The
Family Treatment Court was first implemented in December
of 1997 in Suffolk County as a result of the overwhelming
numbers of parents who appear before the Court on
Neglect petitions due to substance abuse. These parents
are directed to drug treatment by case managers who
monitor their treatment progress. Child welfare and
service issues are handled by Child Protective Service
workers and case managers. Progress of both parents
and children is reported directly to the Court.
Program
Goals And Objectives:

 |
To
provide quality assessment of the substance abuse
treatment needs for each parent appearing before
the Court on a Neglect petition; |

of each parent in treatment; |

 |
To
provide regular and frequent drug testing and
Court appearance for each parent involved in the
Treatment Court. |

 |
To
assess the needs of the children of these parents
with appropriate referral for service; |

 |
