PURPOSE:
The Baby Angelica Children's Center serves as a child
care facility for up to 10 children at a time who
must be in court for matters involving them or their
caregivers. The Center was named the Baby Angelica
Children's Center in memory of a deceased infant found
abandoned at the Court.
DESCRIPTION:
Located in the lower level of the District Court in
Hempstead, the Children's Center is open daily from
9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., ensuring quality drop-in child
care in a safe, supervised, and creative environment.
Music, books, toys and age-appropriate learning tools
are present, geared towards promoting child development.
Activities with children vary from day to day, and
include story times, arts & crafts, songs, and
decorating the room for various holidays. Caregivers
pick children up when they have completed their business
in court. Staff only release children to individuals
identified by the driver's license or photo taken
upon arrival.
Staff
provide families with help in learning about and accessing
essential services and programs such as WIC, the Food
Stamp program, Head Start, the Verizon Lifeline Program,
and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). Staff follow
up by phone within the month to ensure that families
are receiving assistance.
FUNDING:
Program funding is provided by the Unified Court System
and donations.
