PURPOSE: The Baby Angelica Children's Center serves as a child care facility for up to 10 children at a time who must be in court for matters involving them or their caregivers. The Center was named the Baby Angelica Children's Center in memory of a deceased infant found abandoned at the Court.

DESCRIPTION: Located in the lower level of the District Court in Hempstead, the Children's Center is open daily from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m., ensuring quality drop-in child care in a safe, supervised, and creative environment. Music, books, toys and age-appropriate learning tools are present, geared towards promoting child development. Activities with children vary from day to day, and include story times, arts & crafts, songs, and decorating the room for various holidays. Caregivers pick children up when they have completed their business in court. Staff only release children to individuals identified by the driver's license or photo taken upon arrival.
Staff provide families with help in learning about and accessing essential services and programs such as WIC, the Food Stamp program, Head Start, the Verizon Lifeline Program, and HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program). Staff follow up by phone within the month to ensure that families are receiving assistance.

FUNDING: Program funding is provided by the Unified Court System and donations.
