Purpose: The goal of the Alternatives for Youth program is to provide immediate, short term crisis intervention and family support services to families seeking PINS (Person in Need of Supervision) services due to adolescent behavior problems in the home. The program is designed to reduce the need for out-of-home placements by helping families to connect to local services which can help the family function in a positive way.

Program Description: Families are referred to AFY by the Suffolk County Probation Department. Within twenty-four hours, they are contacted by an EAC staff person who makes an appointment for a home visit. The staff meets with the entire family to discuss their needs, identify family strengths, and develop a family service plan which outlines the services needed to ameliorate the difficulties the family is currently facing.
Typical services include help with school-related problems, drug treatment, mental health assessment and treatment, mediation services, help with basic entitlements and referrals for medical services Caseworkers work with families for 30 days, by which time other supports should be in place.  Families may be referred to after care with Family Service League as needed.

Funding: The Alternatives for Youth Program is funded by the Suffolk County Department of Social Services.
